WOMEN'S TENNIS DROPS OPENER AT PENN STATE, 6-1

STATE COLLEGE, PA -- The Temple women's tennis team opened its spring schedule at Penn State on Saturday and the Owls fell to the Lady Lions, 6-1. Junior Ana Maslesa was the only Owl to win on the day, posting a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Maaria Husain at number one singles.
Penn State took an early lead in doubles play. Seniors Maaria Husain and Sarah Spence defeated Ana Maslesa and Yuri Kurashima in a tightly-contested first doubles match , 9-8 (7-5). Then, Sasha Abraham and Katelyn BeVard defeated Jennifer Goeta and Sharanya Pattabi, 8-1, at second doubles. The Lady Lions completed the doubles sweep with Jenny Schular and Jess McKeown besting Lauren Verrall and Laura Seiverling, 8-5.
Kurashima, playing in her first collegiate match, lost to Spence at second singles, 6-2, 4-6 (10-7). Verrall, playing at third singles, fell to Abraham, 6-1, 6-0, while Seiverling dropped her match at #4 singles to BeVard, 6-0, 6-4. Goeta fell 6-0, 6-0, to Andreea Niculescu at number five singles while Pattabi dropped her first singles match as an Owl to Schular, 6-3, 6-1.
Temple (1-1) next plays at Princeton on February 13 (1:00 p.m.).
