CAVALIERS RUN PAST OWLS, 51-3

11.5.05 | Football

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA -  Senior tailback Wali Lundy rushed for a season-high 113 yards and four touchdowns in leading the Virginia Cavaliers to a 51-3 win over Temple on a beautiful Saturday afternoon in front of 57,060 fans at Scott Stadium.  Virginia improved to 5-3 overall, and a perfect 4-0 at home, with the win while Temple dropped its fourth game this against an ACC member school in falling to 0-10.

Virginia looked more like the Cavaliers that upset nationally-ranked Florida State than the squad that dropped a 7-5 decision at North Carolina.  The Cavaliers compiled 449 of total offense, including 270 on the ground. The Owls managed just 167 yards of offense and were held to a mere seven yards rushing on 27 carries.

The Owls, prohibitive underdogs heading into the contest, were without the services of senior running back Umar Ferguson and junior OT Elliot Seifert, both suffering from ankle injuries.

True freshman Georg Coleman made first start due to Ferguson's injury. The local product out of Neshaminy High was held to 21 tough yards rushing on 18 carries. He gave Owl fans reason to cheer midway through the second quarter when he rushed up the middle for what appeared to be a 72-yard TD run.  It was called back, however, due to offsetting personal foul penalties.

Senior OT Nehemiah Ingram made his first collegiate start on the gridiron replacing Seifert.  Ingram, who is expected to contend for a staring spot on the men's basketball team, walked on to the team during the spring and had appeared in the four previous games.

Without the experience of Seifert, however, the offensive line had a difficult time protecting freshman QB Joe DeSanzo, who was sacked three times for a loss of 24 yards.  On the day, DeSanzo completed 7-of-16 passes for 69 yards.

Virginia opened the scoring immediately, taking the opening drive 80 yards on 13 plays with Lundy running in from 19 yards out to make it 7-0.  Coleman carried for five yards on his first touch but that was all the Owl offense could muster on its opening drive.

A Manuel Tapia sack helped to shut down the Cavalier offense in their next possession, but Temple again went three-and-out on its next possession.

Virginia would score on its next two possessions.  First PK Connor Hughes connected on a 28 yard FG to push the score to 10-0.  Then RB Jason Snelling went around end for a 32-yard TD run giving Virginia a 17-0 lead with just over a minute remaining in the first quarter.

Junior DB Chris Page intercepted a Marques Hagans pass on Virginia's opening possession of the second quarter.  After a Coleman six-yard run moved the ball to the Virginia 49, DeSanzo was sacked on consecutive plays to end the drive.

Lundy then rushed for 35 yards on the Cavaliers ensuing possession, and capped it with an 8-yard TD run with 7:45 remaining in the half.  The key play on the drive was Hagans connecting with Tom Santo for a 40-yard pass play to the Owl 15.

UVa closed out the first half scoring when Hughes connected on 36-yard FG with 2:48 to play, making it 27-0.

DeSanzo led Temple on its best drive of the contest, connecting on four passes for 36 yards.  Senior PK Ryan Lux was short on a 58-yard FG attempt as time expired.

Senior Mike McGann (9-20, 91 yards) replaced DeSanzo at quarterback to open the second half, but two turnovers led to two Lundy TD runs to break the contest wide open.

McGann had his first pass attempt batted down by Ahmad Brooks and intercepted by Brennan Schmidt at TU 11.  Lundy ran that one in from five yards out to make it 34-0.  Coleman fumbled on the Owls next possession with Lundy taking it in five plays later for his fourth TD of the game.

Snelling would make it 48-0 with a seven yard TD run, his second of the game, with 4:51 to play in the third quarter.  Snelling rushed for a career-high 126 yards on 17 carries.

The Owls finally broke onto the scoreboard with an 11-play, 42-yard drive that ended in a 30-yard FG by Lux with 10:40 left in the contest.  Coleman rushed for three yards on a fourth-and-two at the UVa 15 to keep the drive alive.

Virginia reserve kicker Noah Greenbaum tacked on a 41-yard FG with 3:10 to play capped the scoring in the contest.

Tapia led the Owls with 10 tackles while senior LB Mike Mendenhall made nine stops. Senior DT Antwon Burton made his first interception of his career.

Freshman WR Bruce Francis career highs in receptions (7) and yards (68).

Temple has a bye week before traveling to Annapolis, Md. for its final game of the 2005 season November 19 against Navy.
