PHILADELPHIA - Temple's Alex Derenthal was today named an honorable mention freshman All-American by The Sporting News. The Davie, Fla. native started all 11 games at center this past season as a redshirt freshman, playing virtually every snap.

Derenthal (6-4, 280) was one of nine players to start all 11 games for the Cherry & White in 2005. He was poised to have a strong rookie campaign after being named the team's co-most improved player at the conclusion of spring drills. A 2004 graduate of Western HS, he was redshirted as a true freshman in 2004.

Derenthal is the third Owl in recent years to earn freshman All-America mention from The Sporting News. Defensive tackle Dan Klecko was a first team selection in 1999 and linebacker Rian Wallace earned fourth team accolades in 2002. Klecko and Wallace are both currently playing in the NFL, with the New England Patriots and Pittsburgh Steelers, repectively.
