WOMEN'S TENNIS FALLS TO PRINCETON, 4-3

PRINCETON, NJ -- The flu has taken its toll on Temple athletic teams this season and this time it cost the Owls' women's tennis team a win against Princeton. Senior Lauren Verrall, Temple's number three singles player, was unable to make the trip to Princeton as she has been suffering from the flu for the previous few days. Verrall's absence altered the Owls lineup allowing host Princeton to eke out a 4-3 win.
Princeton started strong, sweeping through Temple in doubles competition for the game's first point. The Owls rallied by winning the top two singles points. Verrall's absence forced first-year coach Traci Green to move everyone up one singles slot the remainder of the match and the Tigers capitalized, taking the third, fourth and sixth singles matches to win the match.
Junior Ana Maslesa easily won her match at number one singles, defeating Christine Kansky, 6-2, 6-1. Sophomore Yuri Kurashima had the day's most exciting match. Kurashima downed Darcy Robertson, 6-4, 0-6, 9-8 (10-7) at second singles
Junior Laura Seiverling, normally Temple's #4 player, fell to Alison Hashmall, 6-1, 6-0, at the third slot. Newcomer Sharanya Pattabi also went down in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1, to Laura Trimble at fourth singles. Sophomore Jennifer Goeta was leading 6-2, 5-0, in her fifth singles match when her opponent, Brittany Holland, retired. Singles play concluded when Joanna Roth defeated Temple's Jackie Sy, 6-2,6-1.
Temple (1-1) travels back up the New Jersey Turnpike to take on Rutgers on Friday, February 18 (2:30 p.m.).
