COMPTON COMES THROUGH IN PINCH TO LIFT SOFTBALL TO WIN OVER RHODE ISLAND

TAMPA, FL -- Pinch-hitter Makeala Compton stroked a single to left-center that enabled pinch-runner Kelly Swartwood to score the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift the Temple Owls to a 2-1 win over the Rhode Island Rams in adidas Tournament hosted by the University of South Florida Friday evening. The Owls (3-6) fell to Hofstra, 11-2, in their first game of the tourney earlier in the day.
Melissa McCartney reached base all three times she came to the plate against the Rams. The senior third baseman scored the Owls first run in the bottom of the fifth. After reaching base via an infield error, McCartney was doubled home by freshman shortstop Amanda Carver. McCartney singled up the middle with one out in the bottom of the seventh with Swartwood coming in to pinch-run. After Brandie Mora sacrificed Swartwood to second, Compton delivered a pinch single to left center. Swartwood then scored on an error by Ram left fielder Nicole Haywood.
Freshman Cara L'Etolie allowed just one run on three hits over five innings while sophomore Richelle Villescas picked up the win, pitching two scoreless innings of relief and allowing just one hit.
In the first game, the Pride scored eight runs in the second inning, all off Villescas, to win the five-inning contest. Junior third baseman Tara Ulrich hit a two-run homer in the frame while senior left fielder Lisa Torres had two hits, one being a solo homer, in the inning. In all, Hofstra totaled 14 hits over four innings against Temple pitching.
Senior Callie Osborne (1-3) allowed just three hits and two unearned runs in recording her first win of the season. Villescas is now 3-5 on the season.
Junior designated player Lauren Evans had two hits and scored a run for the Owls while sophomore right fielder Shawn Casey had an RBI single..
Temple will take on Illinois (9:30 a.m.) and host South Florida (4:00 p.m.) on Saturday and finish the tournament Sunday with a game against Wagner (12:30 p.m.).
