3.11.05 | Softball
TAMPA, FL -- Senior Melissa McCartney went three-for-four with a double, a runs scored and a RBI, but the Temple softball team could not overcome Long Island's hot bats in falling to the Blackbirds, 9-2, Friday afternoon at the Speedline Invitational hosted by South Florida. The Owls, 0-3 in the tourney, fall to 6-14 on the season.
LIU jumped off to a 4-0 lead, scoring runs in each of the first three innings off starter Richelle Villescas (6-9). Temple made it 4-1 when Brittany Burks singled home McCartney in the bottom of the third. LIU then answered with three more runs in the top of the fifth to break the game open.
Sophomore Brandie Mora led off the Owls' fifth with a triple and McCartney singled her home for the team's final run. Villescas allowed six runs, just two earned, over her five innings if work before giving way to Jen Nacianceno (2 IP, 5 H, 3 ER).
The Owls continue play at the Speedline Invitational with a game against Northern Illinois on Saturday afternoon at Noon.
