3.12.05 | Softball
TAMPA, FL -- Freshman centerfielder Brittany Burks drove in four runs and sophomore first basemen Adrienne Repsher homered and scored three times to lead the Temple Owls to a 9-1 win over Rutgers Saturday at the Speedline Invitational hosted by South Florida. The Owls, which fell earlier in the day 5-4 to Northern Illinois, snapped a five-game losing streak and are now 7-15 on the season.
Burks had the big blow for the Temple offense, tripling to right with the bases loaded. She later scored on a single by senior Melissa McCartney to cap the four-run second inning that put the Cherry and White on top 4-0.
Rutgers tallied its lone run in the bottom of the frame on a solo homer by Jenny Card. Sophomore Richelle Villescas (7-9) held the Scarlet Knight in check the rest of the way, allowing just six hits for the game.
Repsher had two hits to go along with her three runs. Her lead-off homer in the top of the fifth was her second of the season. Shawn Casey and Brandie Mora each singled and scored two runs while Lauren Evans had a double and drove in two Owls.
Temple opens its home schedule on Saturday, March 19 when it hosts Quinnipiac in a doubleheader at Ambler Field (1:30 p.m.).
