OWLS SPLIT TWO GAMES IN FLORIDA

TAMPA, FL -- The Temple softball team split two games in Florida, defeating Michigan State, 3-0, while falling to host South Florida, 13-5. The Owls, 6-11, open play in the Speedline Invitational against Baylor on Thursday.
Freshman Brittany Burks led off the fourth inning with a single through the right side and Aida Esquer followed by lacing a double that hit the bottom of the fence in right center, scoring Burks. Laura Gutscher ripped a double of her own to straightaway center, enabling Esquer to cross home. With two outs, Lauren Evans blooped a single to drive in Gutscher, but Evans was thrown out trying to stretch the single into a double by right fielder Nikki Nicosia.
Sophomore RichelleVillescas (6-7) allowed just four hits in hurling her second shutout of the season.
Freshman Amanda Carver was the bright spot for Temple in loss to South Florida. She went three-for-three in the game with two RBI and two runs scored. The Owls scored four of their five runs in the bottom of the second inning to take a 4-2 lead. South Florida tallied 10 of its runs in the sixth inning, nine off loser Jennifer Nacianceno (0-1), in the comeback win. USF had three doubles and two triples in the frame.
