RIDER BLANKS TEMPLE, 4-0, IN SOFTBALL
4.1.05 | Softball
PHILADELPHIA -- Junior hurler Heather Beintema silenced the Temple softball bats and fellow junior Jill Carrabus homered and drove in two runs to lead visiting Rider to a 4-0 win at Ambler Softball Field Friday afternoon. The Owls fell to 10-18 with the loss while the Broncs improved to 5-13.
Beintema kept the Cherry and White off-balance at the plate all afternoon, allowing just two hits while striking out seven. Both Temple hits off Bientema (3-6) came in the third inning when the Owls managed their only real threat of the contest. Freshman Brittany Burks singled to left to start the frame. Sophomore Brandie Mora sacrificed her to second. Senior Melissa McCartney, the Owls' leading hitter on the season (.254), flew out to left for the second out. Freshman Amanda Carver singled to left, but Burks had to hold at third. Bientema then struck out senior Aida Esquer, who has a team-high nine RBI, to end the inning.
Rider scored a solo run in each of the first three innings off Temple ace Richelle Villescas (9-11). Carrabus had an RBI groundout in the first and then drove one over the left field fence for her third homer of the season in the third. The Broncs, who rapped 11 hits on the day, picked up an insurance run in the seventh.
Temple next hosts Princeton in a doubleheader Sunday (noon) at Ambler Softball Field.
