PHILADELPHIA-Virginia's Tyler Leachman tallied six points off of four goals and two assists to give #4 UVA a 20-5 win over the #16 Temple Owls on Sunday afternoon. The Owls fall to 5-4 on the season, 2-0 in the A-10, while the Cavaliers improve to 9-2 overall and 2-1 in the ACC.
Johna Capaldo was the high scorer for Temple, netting both of the Owls' goals in the second half. Megan Condon dished a team-high two assists on the day. Goalie Megan McLouth stopped eight of UVA's 29 shots.
The Cavaliers took control of the game from the first whistle, finding the back of the net just 17 seconds into the contest. Kate Breslin made it 2-0 UVA 40 seconds later. Patty Glavin put Temple on the board with 22:31 remaining to make it 2-1 but the Cavaliers went on to score five unanswered goals, making it 7-1 by the midway point of the half. Condon dished her first assist to Casey Cech at 15:33 to end the Cavalier scoring run and give Temple its second goal of the game. Corey Leader capitalized on a free position shot with 9:42 remaining to make it 7-3 but that would be the final time that Temple would score, as Virginia netted four goals down the stretch, giving the Cavaliers an 11-3 advantage at the break.
The second half began virtually the same as the first one had ended, with Virginia scoring five unanswered goals. Capaldo ended the scoring barrage at 19:31 after taking a pass from Condon but it proved to be just a brief hiccup in Virginia's offense, as the team scored four more before finally giving up one more goal to end the game with a 20-5 final.
Breslin netted four goals for UVA, while Amy Applet earned five points off of three goals and two assists. Starting goalie Ginger Miles stopped five shots before being replaced by Kendall McBrearty with 22:15 remaining in the second half. McBrearty garnered two saves.
Next up for Temple is a trip to Lafayette for a non-conference match-up on Wednesday, April 13 at 4:00 p.m.
