TEMPLE FOOTBALL TO CONCLUDE SPRING DRILLS THIS SATURDAY WITH ANNUAL CHERRY & WHITE DAY GAME AT AMBLER SPORTS COMPLEX

PHILADELPHIA -- The Temple University football team concludes its spring practice season with the annual Cherry & White intrasquad game this Saturday (April 16) at the Ambler (Pa.) Complex. Kickoff is 2:00 p.m. for the scrimmage, which highlights a Cherry & White Day with festivities that include a baseball doubleheader versus Rhode Island, alumni games, varsity exhibitions and family fun.

Fifth-year senior quarterback Mike McGann, a Havertown, Pa. native who ranks third all-time at Temple in career passing yards (4,498), will direct the offense (White) behind an offensive line that boasts four returning starters. Senior defensive end Mike Mendenhall, a Second Team All-Big East Conference honoree last season from Gibbstown, N.J., will help lead the defense (Cherry), which is bolstered by the return of senior defensive tackle Antwon Burton, an all-star candidate who missed the 2004 campaign with a foot injury.

At haltime of the scrimmage, head coach Bobby Wallace will present the annual Mark Bresani Award for spirit and enthusiasm. The award is named for the son of Mark Bresani, a four-year letterwinner at center for the Owls and captain of Wayne Hardin's 1976 squad. Bresani's son Mark, then a senior football player at St. Joseph's (Hammonton) HS and a spirited Temple football fan, was tragically killed on Halloween night 2003 in an auto accident. The Owls' most improved offensive and defensive players of the spring will also be recognized with awards.

Admission to the family event, which also features giant inflatables, clowns, balloons and face painting, is free. Tailgating begins at 9:00 a.m. with food and beverage sales starting at 11:00 a.m. For students on the main campus, shuttles leave from the Temple Towers and Johnson & Hardwick residence halls every two hours from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m.
