KINGSTON, RI -- The Temple softball offensive woes continued Friday afternoon as the Owls were swept in a doubleheader by the Rhode Island Rams, 2-1 and 2-0. Temple, the defending Atlantic 10 Conference champions, is now 11-23 overall and 0-6 in conference play. URI improves to 6-26 and 3-5 in the A-10.
Senior pitcher Jamie Hurley kept the Temple bats in check in the opener, not allowing her first hit until Brittany Burks singled with two hits in the fifth. The Rams had staked Hurley to a 1-0 lead on courtesy of consecutive doubles by Courtney Wall and Shelley Petersen. Burks would tie the game briefly in the top of the seventh with a clutch two-out single off URI reliever Jill Anderson (2-9) that scored pinch-runner Amanda Carver.
Jamie Plandomon singled home Danielle Quimby in the bottom of the seventh to lift the Rams to the win in the opener.
A two-run triple off Owl starter Richelle Villescas (10-16) in the bottom of the third was all URI would need in the nightcap. Villescas was the loser for the Cherry and White in both games. The Temple hurler struck out eight in the first game, allowing eight hits and two earned runs. She followed that by giving up just one hit in three innings, before giving way to freshman Jen Nacianceno, who did not allow a hit over three innings.
Although the Owls managed just two hits, a single by Adrienne Repsher and a double by Shawn Casey, Temple stranded runners in scoring position in four of the seven innings.
The Owls, who now have a .194 team batting average, have dropped five straight and nine of their last 11 contests. The road does not get any easier for the squad as they travel to Amherst, MA to take on conference power UMass on Sunday.
