4.20.05 | General

PHILADELPHIA -  Kristen Foley, an Assistant Athletic Director at Temple University's since 2000,  has been named as one of ten finalists for the ECAC's Katherine Ley Award, Phil Buttafuoco, the Conference's Commissioner. Established in 1983 for the purpose of honoring an eastern woman athletics administrator who exemplifies the values and characteristics displayed by Katherine Ley, who in 1966 was one of the founders of the Commission on Intercollegiate Athletics for Women, the award honors someone of demonstrated leadership ability, a proponent of women's issues and a role model for women coaches and administrators.

In her current position within the Temple athletic department, Foley oversees the administration of 12 men's and women's sports, including budget construction, scheduling contests, student-athlete crisis intervention, and evaluation and review of coaches. In addition, she supervises the Academic Support and Compliance Units for student-athletes.

Foley, who served as the Tournament Director for the NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Philadelphia Regional hosted by Temple, is a member of the NCAA Women's Basketball Committee and three Atlantic 10 Conference Committees: Executive, Softball and Volleyball, as well as chair of the NCAA Fencing Committee.

Appointed to the position of senior women's administrator in 2000, Foley was head coach of the Temple women's basketball team from 1995--2000. Prior to arriving on North Broad Street, she revived Drexel's women's basketball program, leading the Dragons to their first-ever berth in the North Atlantic Conference semifinal game.

Foley earned a bachelor's degree in physical education/sports communications (1986) and a master's degree in educational administration (1991) from Rutgers University, where she was a four-year letterwinner. She helped lead the Scarlet Knights to consecutive NCAA final eight appearances in 1986 and 1987, while being named to the NCAA East Regional all-tournament team in 1986. Foley then served as an assistant coach at her alma mater for three seasons under Theresa Grentz.

The other finalists for the Ley Award include Brown University's Joan Taylor, Fairleigh Dickinson University's Ann Gulino-Thompson, Dartmouth College's Jo Ann "Josie" Harper, Kean University's Kim Culligan, Janice Quinn of New York University, Cheryl Cole of Plattsburgh State University, Geri Knortz of Saint Michael's College,  Paula Sullivan of Stonehill College and United States Military Academy's Mady Salvani.

The Katherine Ley Award Committee, made up of college administrators in Divisions I, II and III, will make the selection. The announcement is expected on Monday, May 2, although the administrator will be formally honored on Sunday, September 25 at the Honors Dinner presented by Jostens during the ECAC Convention and Trade Show presented by Clark Companies, Clough Harbour Sports, Musco Lighting and Sportsfield Specialties.
