TEMPLE DOWNS GW TO ADVANCE IN A-10 WOMEN'S TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIP
4.22.05 | Women's Tennis
COLLEGE PARK, MD -- In what was arguably the best match of the first day of competition at the 2005 Atlantic 10 Conference Women's Tennis Championships, fourth-seed Temple came from behind to defeat fifth-seed George Washington, 4-2, at The Tennis Center at College Park Friday afternoon. The Owls (5-10) advance to play top-seed UMass Saturday morning (10:30 a.m.). The Minutewomen defeated the Owls, 4-3, on March 24 at Penn's Levy Tennis Pavilion.
After dropping the doubles point in dramatic fashion in a tie-breaker (9-8 (6)) at the No. 3 flight, Temple rallied for the win over fifth-seeded George Washington, 4-2, in a hard-fought contest that lasted nearly four hours. Junior Laura Seiverling provided the winning point as she defeated Tracy Stecko, 6-4, 2-6, 6-1, in a grueling three-set match at the number five slot.
Sophomore Yuri Kurashima defeated Sandra Simunic at the number two position, 6-1, 6-2, while Jennifer Goeta and Sharanya Pattabi won their singles matches in straight sets at fourth and sixth, respectively.
Junior Ana Maslesa was leading 1-0 in the third set over GW's Anastasia Skavronskaia at first singles when Seiverling pulled out the decisive win.
