4.22.05 | Women's Lacrosse
PITTSBURGH, PA.- In what was a rematch of last season's Atlantic 10 Championship game, the Owls proved why they are the four-time defending A-10 champions, handing #19 Duquesne its first loss of the 2005 conference season and ending the Dukes' eight game winning streak. Patty Glavin scored five goals, including three in a span of three minutes, to lift Temple over the Dukes, 9-8, on Friday afternoon. Down 8-5 with 15 minutes remaining, Glavin scored three goals to tie the game at eight. Berkley Summerlin converted a free position shot with just over a minute to go to give Temple the 9-8 victory. With the win, Temple snaps a three-game losing streak and improves to 7-6 overall and 3-1 in the Conference. Duquesne falls to 10-3 and 4-1 in the A-10.
The contest opened with five minutes of scoreless play before Whitney Richards scored from Allison Frengs to put the visiting Owls on the scoreboard. Nicole Cataldo hit a free position goal less than a minute later to take a 2-0 edge 6:31 into play. Ginger Flocco took the feed from Laura App in the 7th minute putting the Dukes on the board. The goal sparked a three-goal spree over less than two minutes of play as Courtney Tamasitis' unassisted goal at 7:58 knotted the game and Flocco hit an unassisted goal at 8:53 for a 3-2 Duquesne edge. The teams then traded goals as Glavin tied the game 3-3 at 12:00 before Mulford gave the Dukes a 4-3 edge at 13:17. Glavin struck again with a free position goal at 14:27 for a 4-4 game and App scored for the Dukes at 17:41 for a 5-4 edge. Johna Capaldo and Corey Leader teamed to score a goal at the 19:20 mark for a 5-5 game and Flocco closed out the half's scoring hitting the back of the Owl's cage at 23:37 giving Duquesne a 6-5 advantage at the break.
The second half began with solid play on both ends of the field that kept the match scoreless for the first eight minutes. The Dukes' Krista Mann broke the silence scoring from Flocco at 8:11 into the stanza for a 7-5 Dukes' edge. Ashley Wood assisted on Caroline Gallagher's goal at 14:57 giving Duquesne an 8-5 margin midway through the frame. Sensing the close game slipping away, Glavin put the team on her back and scored the Owl's next three goals to tie the contest at eight goals a piece. Duquesne had several strong shots saved by Megan McLouth and hit the post twice in the waning minutes before Berkley Summerlin scored a free position goal with just 1:03 on the clock for the 9-8 Temple edge. The Owls won the draw and retained possession as time expired to secure the win.
McLouth earned 15 saves to pull out the win, while Duquesne's Sarah Pacini stopped four shots.
The Owls continue on their A-10 road trip this weekend, traveling to St. Bonaventure for a game on Sunday, April 24 at 12 p.m.
