XAVIER TOPS TEMPLE, 6-1, IN WOMEN'S TENNIS
4.3.05 | Women's Tennis
PHILADELPHIA -- The Temple women's tennis team felt the impact of missing their top singles player in falling to Atlantic 10 Conference rival Xavier, 6-1, at the Arthur Ashe Tennis Complex Saturday afternoon. With the loss, the Owls fall to 4-9 on the season while the Musketeers improve to 12-6.
For the second straight match junior Ana Maslesa, the 26th ranked player in the Northeast Region, was unavailable to play. The Owls' top player is nursing a leg injury.
With Maslesa on the sidelines, XU got off to a great start by sweeping the three doubles matches to earn the first point of the match. In the top position, Stephanie Bauer and Lauren Clary posted an 8-4 win over Yuri Kurashima and Jackie Sy. At No. 2, Alicia Papa and Jackie Vilines defeated Sharanya Pattabi and Laura Seiverling, 8-6. Kristen Clary and Sarah Potts completed the XU sweep with a 9-7 win over Jennifer Goeta and Lauren Verrall at third doubles.
Pattabi was the lone Temple player to record a win, taking the fifth singles position, 6-4, 6-3, over Papa.
Lauren Clary picked up her 27th win of the season with a 6-0, 6-2 defeat of Kurashima, who normally plays second singles for Temple. Kristen Clary improved to 23-7 with a 6-0, 6-0 defeat of Verrall. Bauer recorded a 6-3, 6-0 defeat of Goeta at the third slot while Vilines posted a 6-3, 6-3 win over Seiverling at fourth singles. Potts closed out the XU win with a 6-4, 6-1 defeat of Sy at sixth singles.
Temple next plays at Old Dominion on April 16.
