PENN TOPS TEMPLE, 6-0, IN SOFTBALL

PHILADELPHIA -- Sophomore Lindsey Permar tossed a complete game shutout as host Penn downed Temple, 6-0, Thursday afternoon on Warren Field. The Owls fell to 11-19 on the season while the Quakers improved to 10-13.

 

Sophomore Brandi King started the Penn scoring drive in the bottom of the second with a lead-off double. Junior Jen Nichols followed by safely reaching on a bunt attempt, moving King to the third. A wild pitch by Temple starter Jen Nacianceno allowed King to cross the plate for the first run of the day. One batter later, Nichols gave Penn the 2-0 lead by touching home on a double by Kaelin Ainley.

 

The Owls threatened in the top of the third inning loading the bases with one out. Laura Gutscher grounded to third baseman Meghan Cowen who threw for the force out at home. Adrienne Repscher ended the inning by flying out to short leftfield.

 

The Quakers broke the game open in the fifth inning plating four runs on three hits. All but run came off Nacianceno (1-5), who allowed five runs (four earned) in four and one-third innings of work.  Richelle Villescas allowed two hits and one unearned run in one and two-thirds innings of relief.

 

Temple travels to La Salle for a Saturday Atlantic 10 Conference twinbill (noon).
