PHILADELPHIA-Allison Frengs netted five goals, including the game-winner in overtime, to lead Temple (10-6, 6-1 A-10) to a 11-10 overtime win against the Colonials of George Washington (13-4, 5-2 A-10) on Sunday afternoon at TU's Geasey Field. With the win, the Owls clinch the #1 seed in the upcoming Atlantic 10 Championship to be held May 6-7 in Richmond, Virginia. The Owls will take on fourth-seeded Richmond on Friday at 5:00 p.m.
Senior Megan McLouth earned 10 saves on her Senior Day, bringing her career total to 373 saves. Fellow senior Megan Condon tallied one shot in her final game on Geasey Field.
The first half was intense, with the teams going goal for goal. Berkley Summerlin found Johna Capaldo for Temple's first goal just 40 seconds into the contest at 29:30. Leading Colonial scorer Laura Hostetler netted the equalizer after taking a pass from Heidi Mayer at 27:43. Corey Leader found her way into circle and was fouled, earning a free position shot. Leader's low shot bounced by GW's Caitlin Garman to make it 2-1 Temple. The teams battled for the next few minutes until Jenny Heisler broke the scoring drought unassisted at 15:27. Temple regained the lead at 16:23 when Frengs found a cutting Casey Cech. The Colonials Colleen Schmidt and Katelyn Honeyford scored two quick goals to give GW the lead with 12:57 remaining but Whitney Richards fired a pass to Frengs at 11:04 to tie the game at four. Annie Howley gave the Colonials back the lead with 6:54 remaining and it looked that a 5-4 score would hold going into the half. The Owls, however, weren't finished and Leader converted a free position shot with 33 seconds remaining to make it 5-5 at the break.
Fresh on the heels of Leader's tying goal, the Owls returned to score four straight goals to take a 9-5 lead with 22:52 remaining. Frengs scored on two straight free positions before W. Richards found Cech for the Owls' eighth goal at 25:25. Leader scored her third goal of the game unassisted at 22:52. Just when it looked as if the Owls were going to coast to their fourth straight win, GW responded with a four goal run of its own to tie the score at nine with 6:47 left to play. Heisler fired a pass at Mayer at 20:07 to start the run and Hostetler finished with three straight goals, two assisted by Mayer. With the teams fighting for the the title of Co-Atlantic 10 regular season Champs, each possession became more critical than the next. Temple gained control of the ball and began to work the ball around until someone was able to get open. Just as she had in so many other games, Frengs cut into the circle, caught a pass from Cech and fired a shot into the upper right hand corner of the goal to give Temple a 10-9 advantage with 3:45 remaining. GW wasn't finished yet as Mayer and Hostetler teamed to score the overtime-forcing goal with 1:31 to play.
After battling through most of the first overtime period scoreless, Frengs was able to break free and score the game-winner with 3:13 to go. Though the Colonials tried their best, Temple's defensive unit, anchored by McLouth proved to be too strong to overcome and the Owls earned a share of their seventh straight regular season Conference title.
