FORMER TEMPLE QB AND ASSISTANT COACH CARMEN PICCONE PASSES AWAY AT AGE 75

PHILADELPHIA - Carmen Piccone, a Temple quarterback from 1951-53 who later served as an assistant coach for the Owls, has passed away at the age of 75. Piccone died Sunday at Lankenau Hospital in Wynnewood, Pa. after a brief illness.

 

A star football player at South Philadelphia High School, Piccone played three seasons at Temple under head Coach Al Kawal and served as team co-captain as a senior. Upon graduating, he stayed on to coach the Cherry & White freshman squad in 1954. After multiple coaching positions, he returned to Owl Country in 1977 and served as an assistant under Wayne Hardin until 1982.

 

Piccone was hired by his former coach, Kawal, as the backfield coach at Southern Illinois in 1955 before serving as the Salukis head coach from 1960 to 1965. He also worked as an assistant at VMI (1966) and Cornell (1967-74). From 1975-76 Piccone was Head Football Coach and Assistant Athletic Director at Trenton State College.

 

For 10 years, until 1993, Piccone was a scout for the New Orleans Saints. He was an assistant in the player personnel department of the Philadelphia Eagles from 1999 to 2001.

 

In addition to his wife of 53 years, Mr. Piccone is survived by sons Marc and Scott; two brothers; and six grandchildren.

 

A Funeral Mass will be said at 10:30 a.m. Friday (July 15) at St. Joseph Church, 20 S. Spring Garden St., Ambler. Friends may call from 8 to 10 a.m. at Urban Funeral Home, 1111 S. Bethlehem Pike, Ambler. Burial will be in St. John Neumann Cemetery, Chalfont.
