TEMPLE ANNOUNCES FOOTBALL SCHEDULING AGREEMENTS WITH ARMY, NAVY AND PENN STATE
7.20.05 | Football
PHILADELPHIA -- Temple University Director of Athletics Bill Bradshaw today announced football scheduling agreements with the United States Military Academy, the United States Naval Academy and Penn State University. Temple will play both Army and Navy four times by virtue of a pair of two-for-two agreements and Penn State three times as per a two-for-one deal.
"The announcement of multi-year agreements with Army, Navy and Penn State is very significant for Temple football," said Bradshaw. "Not only are these programs steeped in tradition, but they also provide Temple a regional competition base. To renew rivalries, while giving our fans the opportunity to attend games versus desirable opponents at Lincoln Financial Field, is very exciting."
Temple will travel to West Point, N.Y. to take on the Black Knights in 2008 and 2012. Army visits Lincoln Financial Field to meet the Owls in 2009 and 2011. Army holds a 3-1 advantage in the all-time series between the schools which began in 1943 and was last played in 1994, a 23-20 Temple victory at West Point.
The Owls take flight for Annapolis, Md. and Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in 2005 (Nov. 19) and 2006. Navy plays the Cherry & White at Lincoln Financial Field in 2007 and 2009. This season's game at Navy kicks off at 1:30 p.m. and will be televised live on CSTV. The Owls and Midshipmen have met five times in the series that dates back to 1988 with Temple holding a 4-1 advantage.
The agreement with Penn State has the Owls traveling to State College, Pa. in 2006 and 2009. The Nittany Lions visit Lincoln Financial Field in 2007. The schools have met 35 times in the series that dates back to 1931, with Penn State retaining a 31-3-1 advantage.
On May 17, 2005, Temple President David Adamany announced that the University accepted an invitation for its football program to compete in the MAC. The Owls will play as an affiliate member in 2005 and 2006, playing four and six league games respectively, before gaining full membership in 2007.
Temple's 2005 football campaign begins on Thursday evening, September 1, at Arizona State. The team reports for preseason camp on Friday, August 5 and is slated to hold its first practice on Saturday, August 6.
