PHILADELPHIA - The Temple football team will host Carousel House, a sports camp for mentally disabled young adults, at its Tuesday (August 23) morning practice. On Wednesday (August 24), the Owls' commitment to community service continues, when approximately 20 Temple football players pay a visit to Temple University Children's Medical Center.
Carousel House Sports Camp will arrive for the final 30 minutes of Tuesday's practice, which is scheduled from 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Edberg-Olson Hall Football Complex, located at 10th and Diamond Streets. After practice, players and coaches will interact with the campers, signing autographs and taking pictures. The visit will mark the eighth consecutive year that CHSC has visited a preseason practice since Bobby Wallace has been head coach. In 2003, campers presented Wallace a plaque "For Loyalty and Devotion to the Disabled Athletes of Carousel House."
On Wednesday, members of the team will be visiting patients at Temple University Children's Medical Center, located at 3509 North Broad Street, from 12:45 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. The visit is in conjunction with Temple football's participation in Special Spectators, a Chicago-based nonprofit organization. Special Spectators, in partnership with Division I-A football programs and children's hospitals, coordinates a day of fun and excitement for seriously ill children and their parents at a college football game while exposing student-athletes to the inspiration and reward of making a powerful contribution to the community by visiting children's hospitals and pediatric units.
Through Temple's generous involvement in Special Spectators, children who have been patients at Temple University Children's Medical Center will see the Owls in action against Western Michigan on September 24th.
Both community service initiatives are part of the Temple Teammates program conducted by the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics. The goal of the program is to raise consciousness and awareness in young people throughout the Greater Philadelphia area on aspects of leadership, positive character development and high ethical standards.
