WOMEN'S SOCCER FALLS TO RUTGERS 6-0 IN SEASON OPENER

PISCATAWAY, NJ - The Temple women's soccer team suffered defeat in their season opener with a 6-0 loss at Rutgers on Friday August 26.  Rutgers balanced offense managed to tally three goals in each half in posting the win.

 

The Scarlet Knights (1-0) took control of the game in the opening period, outshooting the Owls (0-1) while also holding a 2-0 advantage on corner kicks. Kristen Edmonds netted the first and game-winning goal in just under eight minutes into the first half.  Edmonds also dished two assists for an impressive four points in her first collegiate game. Zoe Avner scored the second goal of the game off of a penalty shot at 11:47.   Dominique Esposito scored the final goal of the period (26:25) from a cross to the center of the six-yard box from Edmonds.  Esposito earned five points, posting two goals and assisting on a third. 

 

Rutgers sustained its dominance in the second half and posted another goal 15 minutes in as Edmonds found Kim Mineo off a cross from the left to the six-yard box.  Mineo shot the ball into the net to give the Scarlet Knights a 4-0 lead. Esposito netted her second goal of the game off of a floater from 25 yards (72:43).  In the last minute of the game, freshman Stephanie MacCormack posted the first goal of her career.

 

Temple's freshman goalkeeper Tiffany Kasunich recorded five saves in her collegiate debut. 

 

Temple next plays at Seton Hall on September 2.
