AMBLER, PA - The Temple women's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision on Sunday afternoon to Massachusetts at Ambler Field. The Minutewomen took advantage of a free kick opportunity from junior forward Britt Canfield with just over six minutes remaining in the first frame to improve their season mark to 10-4 and 4-2 in the Atlantic 10. With the loss, the Cherry and White fall to 3-11 overall and 0-5 in conference play.
Despite a host of scoring chances in the first 45 minutes that included three corner attempts, the Cherry and White faced a one-goal deficit heading into the intermission following Canfield's tally at the 38th minute. A hand-ball penalty against the Owls awarded the Minutewomen with a 30-yard free kick that was deposited just passed the outstretched arms of Temple goalkeeper Tiffany Kasunich. With 24 minutes remaining in the half, Owls freshman defender Dana Kerem narrowly missed the game's first goal sailing one of the Owls' 10 shots high over the crossbar. Minutes later, senior defender Trish Dalton served a ball into the box that was headed high by senior midfielder Elena Hekimian.
Two runs early in the second half by Temple sophomore forward Charisma Wright turned fruitless as UMass junior goalkeeper Kristen Walker made two of her five saves. The Cherry and White offense consistently pressured the Minutewomen defense in firing four second half shots, but were unable to tally the game's equalizer. Dalton's last corner attempt of the afternoon, at the five-minute mark, was pushed out of the box by UMass sophomore forward Vanessa Patry.
Kasunich faced 13 shots on the afternoon and posted six saves in keeping the Owls close.
Temple returns to the road Friday at Duquesne for a 7:30 p.m. start.
