Seven to be Inducted into Temple Athletic Hall of Fame

PHILADELPHIA - Jane Ann Cantwell (women's swimming), Beverly Grove (lacrosse, field hockey), Gary Hardin (golf), Bill Mendek (baseball), Kevin Ross (football), Bill Roth (men's gymnastics) and Santee Ruffiin (men's track) have been selected for induction into the Temple University Athletic Hall of Fame.

The 2006 Temple Athletic Hall of Fame Class will be officially inducted on Saturday, October 28 at a 11 a.m. ceremony in the Red Zone Lounge at Lincoln Financial Field before Temple's Homecoming game with Bowling Green (1:00 p.m.). The new inductees will be welcomed into the Hall of Fame at halftime.

Cantwell was an outstanding performer in Spring Board Diving for Temple, earning All-American honors in 1980 and 1981. She finished sixth nationally at the Three-Meter Spring Board Championships in 1980 and took 13th place in 1981. During her four-year diving career she had a near perfect record in dual meet competition.

Grove starred in lacrosse and field hockey. A four-time All-College selection in United States lacrosse (1977, 78, 79, 80), she was a three-time Temple Lacrosse MVP and scored 165 points during her career. She was Temple's field hockey MVP in 1977 and 1978. She was captain of both teams.

Hardin starred for the Temple golf team from 1972 to 1974. A team captain, he earned honorable mention All-American honors in 1974. He captured the Middle Atlantic Conference individual championship in 1974, and played in both the 1972 and 1974 NCAA Tournaments. He earned his PGA of America membership in 1982.

Mendek finished his Temple career as the Owls' leader in wins, saves, appearances, innings pitched and strikeouts. He is still Temple's leader in wins with 30 (1981-84) and ranks second in saves (12) and strikeouts (289). He had a 10-4 record as a senior with a 2.33 ERA. He was drafted in the ninth round by the Seattle Mariners.

Ross was an outstanding defensive back for Temple from 1980 to 1983. He is tied for third in pass interceptions (13) and is second in fumbles recovered (5). He is also tied for first in fumbles recovered in a game with three against Cincinnati in 1983. He was drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs in 1984 and was a 14-year NFL standout.

Roth was an outstanding all-around gymnast at Temple. In 1990, he was a NCAA All-American in floor exercise and vault. He owns the Temple records for all-around, vault and horizontal bar. He made U.S. Championship history in 1990 when he scored the first 10.00 with his optional high bar routine.

Ruffin was an outstanding track star at Temple from 1952 to1955. He earned four letters and was team captain in 1955. He held the Temple record in the 220 yard low hurdles. He was a medalist in the 220 low hurdles at the IC4A championships in 1954 and 1955. He was a medalist in the 440 yards hurdles twice at the Penn Relays.
