Late Rally Falls Short In 2-1 Loss At Saint Joseph's

PHILADELPHIA - Saint Joseph's opened up a 2-0 lead and then held off a late Temple charge to post a 3-1 win in women's soccer action at SJU's Finnesey Field Friday night. The Hawks improve to 5-7-0, 2-1-0 with the win while the Owls fall to 3-9-0, 0-3-0 in Atlantic 10 Conference play.
Saint Joseph's opened the scoring in the first half when senior Kimmy Leigh gathered a loose ball in front of Temple's net and blasted into the open net as senior Liz Tarasevich was out of the play after an earlier challenge.
Thw Hawks went up two goals in the 63rd minute. SJU senior Nancy Cook went one on one down the right side of the field versus Temple's lone defender. Cook came to a quick stop and passed across the field to a charging Shannon Osborn. Osborn gathered the ball from about 20 yards out and blasted a shot to the upper right corner for the tally.
Temple cut the deficit to 2-1 late in the game as sophomore midfielder Katrina Lynch headed a centering pass from senior forward Darlene Beamon and beat the challenge of Saint Joseph's junior goalkeeper Jen Kuhn at 84:15.
The Owls pressured SJU over the final minutes, but the Hawks worked the ball deep into Temple's zone. Following a deflection off a Temple player over the end line, Osborn set up for a corner kick. On the kick, the ball turned towards the middle of the goal and beat Temple's goalkeeper, Liz Tarasevich, finding the back of the net at 87:02 to seal the win for SJU.
For the game, Saint Joseph's out-shot Temple 20-8 and held a 4-3 edge in corners.
Tarasevich made a game-high seven saves in the loss while Kuhn recorded two saves.
Tenple returns to Ambler Field Friday, October 13 when it hosts Rhode Island in its conference home opener. Match time is 3:00 p.m.
