PHILADELPHIA - Tina Sloan Green, who coached the Temple women's lacrosse team from 1975-91, will be honored at the 1st Annual Black Lacrosse Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, the organization has announced. In her 16 year coaching career at Temple, the Owls made nine NCAA tournament appearances (1983-90, '92) that featured two national championships (1984, '88), two second place finishes (1983, '87) and four semifinals (1985, '86, '89, '90).
"The National Black Lacrosse Leadership has made a terrific selection in enshrining Tina Sloan Green into its Hall of Fame," said Temple University Director of Athletics Bill Bradshaw. "Her numerous accolades, including her induction into the Temple Athletics Hall of Fame in 1994, is a true testament to her dedication as a teacher, coach and role model."
After being named the first African-American head coach in the history of women's intercollegiate lacrosse, Sloan Green boasted a 207-60-4 overall record and won 29 consecutive contests from 1984-85. Under her tutelage, 21 Owls garnered All-American status while the program achieved its first and only undefeated season in 1988 (19-0) following a 15-7 win over Penn State in the national championship game.
Prior to her responsibilities as the women's lacrosse coach, Sloan Green guided the Temple field hockey program for six seasons (1974-79). In reaching three consecutive AIAW national championships (1977-79), she posted a 44-33-10 overall mark.
Sloan Green earned her bachelor's degree in health and physical education at West Chester University (1966) after receiving All-American field hockey honors in 1965 and 1966. Before receiving her master's degree at Temple (1970), she toured with the United States Lacrosse Squad in 1969.
In addition to her teaching career, Sloan Green was chair of the Committee on the Status of Minority Women within the AIAW, has presented programs on the topic of Black Women in Sports to the National Advisory Committee in Black Higher Education and has authored two books; Black Women in Sport and Modern Women's Lacrosse.
