PHILADELPHIA - Seven Owls were today named to the 2006 Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Football team. Temple has the most honorees on the team of the 10 Delaware Valley institutions that sponsor football.

Leading the Cherry & White academic all-stars were fifth-year graduate students Elliot Seifert (OT, biology) and Nate Schiccatano (FB, liberal arts). Also cited were senior Michael Loveland (DB/WR, business management), junior Abioye Oyeyemi (DB, international business) and sophomores Kevin Armstrong (TE/DE, sport & recreation management), Ben Hendy (TE, university studies) and Ryan Herting (LB, marketing).

In order to be eligible for the team, a player must be of sophomore athletic standing, have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better and be a starter or key reserve. Ballots for the Inquirer Academic All-Area Teams, which sponsored seven teams (men's cross country, women's cross country, field hockey, men's soccer, women's soccer, volleyball) this fall season, are compiled and voted upon by the Philadelphia Area Sports Information Directors Association.

The other nine schools eligible to nominate candidates for the team are Cheyney, Delaware Valley, La Salle, Penn, Rowan, Ursinus, Villanova, West Chester and Widener. Both Cheyney and Ursinus boasted four honorees and West Chester had three. Student-athletes from Delaware Valley (2), Penn (1), Rowan (1), Villanova (1) and Widener (1) comprised the rest of the squad. Rowan senior quarterback Mike Orihel was named the Player of the Year.

The 2006 season marks the second time that the Inquirer has sponsored the Academic All-Area All-Star team. After the 2005 campaign, Temple also had the most honorees, with four Owls capturing accolades.
