PHILADELPHIA -- With number one singles player Ana Maslesa sidelined, the Temple women's tennis team stepped up to the challenge to defeat a solid New Jersey Tech squad, 4-2 at the Arthur Ashe Tennis Center Thursday afternoon.  The Owls improved to 5-1 on the season while the Highlanders, who are reclassifying from Division II to Division I in the fall of 2006, fell to 7-3.

"Yuri (Kurashima) and Sharanya (Pattabi)played extremely well today," said second-year coach Traci Green. "They and had an outstanding match."

Kurashima moved into the number one singles spot due to an injury to Maslesa, who suffered a broken left arm in a fall Monday.  The junior Tokyo native posted a 7-6 (3), 6-4 win over Iulia Doci in her debut in the top spot and teamed with Pattabi to win at first doubles, 8-1.

Pattabi, who moved up to second singles, earned a 7-5, 6-2 win over Fatiam Kasem. Freshman Felicia Frazier and junior Barbara Oria Boer also posted singles wins at the third and fifth slots, respectively.

NJIT won the doubles point, taking the second and third slots.  The Highlanders' Eva Salierno earned her team's lone singles win with a hard-fought 7-6, 6-4 win over Eva Marsalkova.

The Owls travel to Princeton this weekend to take on Syracuse on Saturday (2:00 p.m.) and Princeton Sunday (11:00 a.m.)
