TAMPA, FL -- The Temple softball team found itself on both ends of dramatic endings in yesterday's action at the USF Wilson Invitational at the University of Southern Florida. In the first game of the day, the Owls (1-4) scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the fifth inning to edge the College of Charleston, 8-7. The nightcap was just the opposite, as Florida A & M University erupted for fix runs in the second posting a 13-2 win over the Owls in the final game of play in the tournament.

After a scoreless first inning, the College of Charleston Cougars, (1-4), grabbed an early lead at the top of the second, scoring two runs to take the 2-0 advantage.  In the bottom half of the inning, the Cherry and White answered back. After hammering a single down the middle, Danielle Fagan was advanced to third base off of a double by fellow freshman Courtney Norene. It was Norene's second double of the season. Fagan found her was home on an error by Cougar Jessica Lyness which moved Brandie Mora to first base. Amanda Carver singled to advance Mora to the 2b position.  Junior Shawn Casey pinch hit for Owl Sophomore Brittany Burks. Her walk pushed Norene home and tied the game. Casey moved to second on a wild pitch that set up the Owls fourth run. The Cougars removed Shannon Howard from the mound and put in Kim Christensen. Christensen had one strike out, but allowed two runs, as Carver and Casey made their way home before the inning ended with Repsher lining out to right field.

The Cougars spent the rest of the game attempting to advance on the Owl's lead. They nearly succeeded in the seventh inning, having brought the game's score to 8-5. Left fielder Jennifer Golden and third baseman Izmena Carbara  attempted to tie, each scoring runs, but The Cougars were unable to generate a third run to tie the game and bring it to overtime. The game ended 8-7, the Temple and improved Temple's record 1-3. Mora was credited with scoring the game winner.

Florida A & M University exploded against Temple, in the Owl's final game of the tournament. Temple freshman Nicole Lee opened the scoring with an unearned run at the top of the first. FAMU responded with two runs in the second and multiple runs throughout the game. FAMU erupted in the fourth, scoring six runs off of four hits. Temple was unable to get back on the board until the fifth inning when sophomore Kelly Swartwood, pinch running for Repsher, scored the second run on a wild pitch.

Despite Temple's losing record, their hitting has been exceptional throughout the tournament, but truly highlighted particularly by their performance in the last two games. They hit 10 for 24 against FAMU averaging .416.  They hit 6 for 22 against the College of Charleston, averaging .272. The team's collective batting average in their last day of competition was a .343, an impressive average for a team participating in its first tournament of the season.
