#20 WOMEN'S LACROSSE FALLS TO #6 UNC, 15-4, IN SEASON OPENER

CHAPEL HILL - The 20th-ranked Temple women's lacrosse team opened the 2006 season with a 14-5 loss to #6 University of North Carolina win on Friday evening at Fetzer Field.
Junior Allison Frengs led Temple with two goals, while Johna Capaldo and Nicole Cataldo netted one a piece.
Stephanie Scurachio led the Tar Heels with four goals. Melissa McCarthy scored three times for UNC, while Amber Falcone had two goals and an assist and Jess Allen had two goals. Christina Juras led Carolina with three assists.
The Tar Heels got off to a sluggish offensive start early, but were led in the first half by Scurachio, who scored the game's first two goals unassisted. McCarthy's unassisted goal at the 10:07 mark made it 3-0 Carolina, and Falcone followed with a goal off an Erica LaGrow assist to make it 4-0 Tar Heels. Temple's Johna Capaldo scored the Owls' only goal in the first 30 minutes at the 25:01 mark to make it 4-1, but Allen and LaGrow followed with goals in the last three minutes of the opening period to make it 6-1 Carolina at the break.
Temple's Caitlin Gregory subbed into the cage for the Owls at halftime but could fare no better against the Tar Heel offense, which dominated possession throughout and out-shot Temple 31-13 on the night. Starting goalkeeper Bridget McMullan allowed six goals and made five saves in the first half. Gregory allowed nine goals and recorded five saves after halftime.
After Temple's Allison Frengs scored to make it 6-2 UNC 0:35 into the second period, Carolina scored the next nine goals in a row to take a commanding, 15-2 lead.
Temple continues its road trip of top 10 opponents when it travels to #5 Virginia on Sunday at 1 p.m.
