3.21.06 | Women's Lacrosse
PHILADELPHIA- Temple rallied from a four-goal deficit to pull within one goal with just over 15 minutes to play but it was not enough, as 14th-ranked Penn State defeated the Owls, 9-6, on Tuesday afternoon. The Owls fall to 2-4 on the season, while Penn State improves to 5-2.
Casey Cech and Nicole Cataldo each had two goals to lead Temple, while Allison Frengs had two assists and one goal. Patty Glavin dished two assists and Whitney Richards netted one tally.
Shari Maslin netted four goals, including the game-winner, to lead Penn State, while Lori Havrilla scored three goals. Lindsay Dutch earned one goal and one assist and Kerry Shea chipped in with one goal.
The Nittany Lions came out blazing, rattling off three unanswered goals and taking a 3-0 lead just seven minutes into the contest. Maslin started off the scoring after receiving a feed from Meg Boyd and Havrilla found the back of the net for PSU's second and third tallies. Frengs found a cutting Cech for Temple's first goal at 20:31 to make it 3-1 but Havrilla struck again at 9:03 after earning a free position. Frengs fed Richards for Temple's second goal and Maslin answered right back with a free position goal to make it 5-2 in favor of the Nittany Lions. Cech fired a shot past PSU goalkeeper Cammie Jurkowsky with just 19 seconds remaining in the first half to make it 5-3 at the break.
Maslin and Shea scored back to back goals to start the second half, giving the Nittany Lions a 7-3 lead. Temple answered with a 3-0 run to bring the Owls within one goal (7-6) with just over 15 minutes to go. Glavin fed Cataldo at the top of the arc for a goal at 21:48 and then Frengs converted a free position shot at 16:49. Cataldo and Glavin struck again just 50 seconds later and it seemed that Temple would overtake Penn State. That would be the final tally for the Owls, however, and Dutch and Maslin scored the final two goals down the stretch for the 9-6 result.
Sophomore goalie Caitlin Gregory posted nine saves in goal for Temple, as did PSU's Jurkowsky.
Temple travels to Old Dominion on Saturday, March 25 for a match-up with the Monarchs at 1 p.m.
