OWLS SPLIT DOUBLEHEADER WITH BILLIKENS IN A-10 SOFTBALL OPENER

AMBLER, PA -- Temple softball split a doubleheader with the Saint Louis Billikens in its Atlantic 10 Conference season opener Friday afternoon at Ambler Field. The Cherry and White shut out the Billikens in the first game, 3-0, while SLU took the nightcap, 5-4. 

Junior Jessica Rohn, who went one for two in the first game, opened the day's scoring in the first inning.. After reachingbase via an error, she adavanced to second courtesy of sophomore Brittany Burks' sacrifice bunt.  She took third on a wild pitch then freshman pitcher Katie Burdeaux singled to drive her home. Senior Lauren Evans blasted a home run to center field in the second, making it 2-0.   Freshman Nikki Lee completed the scoring with a triple to deep left,driving in Makeala Compton, who reached base with a pinch-hit single. 

Burks scored the first run of game two, singling, stealing second and ultimately being sent home by a Burdeaux RBI single. Then SLU's Cara Sell took over. Sell tied the game with a solo homer in the second inning and then put the Billikens ahead 4-1 with a three-run blast in the fourth.

The Owls responded with two runs in the bottom of the fourth. Junior Brandie Mora singled and stole second and third. Evans singled her home to make it 4-2. Compton sacrificed Evans to second junior Adrienne Repsher driving her home with a single.

A costly seventh inning error by Mora allowed Jill Pursell to score an insurance run, making it 5-3. In the bottom of the inning, Repsher singled and reached third on an error by Billiken centerfielder Sell. Danielle Fagan singled her home, but that was all the Owls would score.

Temple (5-14, 1-1 A-10) next hosts Saint Francis (NY) on Wednesday, March 29 (2:00 p.m.).  The Owls' next conference game is slated for April 2 when they host St. Bonaventure Bonnies. Game time is scheduled for noon.
