ORLANDO, FL.- Johna Capaldo netted three goals, including the game-winner with 25 seconds remaining, to give the Temple women's lacrosse team its first win of the 2006 season, an 11-10 victory over the University of Connecticut on Tuesday afternoon in Orlando, Florida. Temple improves to 1-3 on the season.
Casey Cech and Corey Leader chipped in with two goals a piece, while Allison Frengs, Nicole Cataldo and Patty Glavin each scored one goal.
Temple jumped out to an early lead in the contest, scoring the first three goals to take a 3-0 lead. The Huskies came firing back, however, netting four unanswered goals and earning a 4-3 advantage. Temple ended the scoring barrage to tie the score at four but UConn rattled off two more to make it 6-4. The Owls found the back of the net once more before the end of the first half to make it 6-5 at halftime.
Temple continued its scoring run into the second half, taking a 7-6 lead early in the second stanza. The Huskies responded with two goals of their own to make it 8-7 but Temple countered with two more tallys to take back the one goal lead. The teams took turns with the lead for the remainder of the half until Temple was able to gain a two goal advantage with under a minute to play. With the scoreboard reading 10-9, the Owls decided to stall and move the ball around. Capaldo found the back of the net for the game-winner with 25 seconds to play and it seemed that Temple would take an 11-9 victory. The Huskies mounted a comeback with just five seconds to play but the Owls won the ensuing draw control to preserve the win.
Bridget McMullan earned six saves in the win, including three key saves down the stretch.
The Owls are off until March 17 when they host Brown in their home opener at 4 p.m.
