4.13.06 | Softball

KINGSTON, RI- Temple softball came back from their loss to Saint Francis with a vengeance, sweeping A-10 rival Rhode Island in a doubleheader on Thursday. The Cherry and White had five runs off eight hits in the first game of the twinbill, which ended 5-2.  Temple had six runs off seven hits in the nightcap, to post 6-1 win. The Owls improve to 13-17 for the season, and 6-2 in the Atlantic 10.

The Owls came out swinging in game one, scoring their first run in the first inning. Sophomore Brittany Burks singled and , following a sacrifice by senior Lauren Evansm scored on an error by left fielder Shelly Peterson.

The Cherry and White got back on the board in the third inning. Freshman Danielle Fagan doubled to left field. Junior Makeala Compton blasted a homer to center field for two runs. Classmate Adrienne Repsher followed suit in the next at-bat, slamming the ball over the center field fence. Compton solidified the Owls' lead in the fifth, sending the ball soaring over the center field fence once again for her second homer of the game. The Rams mounted what looked to be a comeback in the bottom of the sixth, but their effort was not enough to overcome the Owls.

Game two remained scoreless until the third.  Compton, leading off for the Owls in the inning, was walked.  Junior Brandie Mora entered the game to pinch run for Compton. Repsher reached on an error by first baseman Courtney Wall. Rohn's single to left field brought Mora and Repsher home. Rohn found the plate off of a single from sophomore Brittany Burks. The Cherry and White came back strong in the fifth, scoring three runs. Fagan blasted a two-run homer, scoring Evans.  Alyssa Martino scored the URI's only run, belting the ball well beyond the left field fence for a homer.

The Owls continue their road trip, next journeying to Massachusetts to take on Atlantic 10 rival the UMass Minutemen. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 PM.
