WOMEN'S TENNIS SPLITS TWO MATCHES AT A-10 CHAMPIONSHIPS

MONROEVILLE, PA -- The Temple women's tennis team split its two matches on the first day of play at the 2006 Atlantic 10 Women's Tennis Championships Friday. The eighth-seeded Owls defeated ninth-seed Fordham, 4-1, in the opening match of the Championship held at Club 4 Life. Top-seed Richmond defeated Temple, 4-0, in the quarterfinal round.
Senior Ana Maslesa won her match at second singles against Fordham and also teamed with freshman Eva Marsalkova for an 8-6 victory at third doubles to clinch that point for the Owls. Sophomore Barbara Oria Boer and freshman Felicia Frazier won 8-3 at second doubles. The two also won their singles matches, Frazier, 6-1, 6-3, at the fifth slot and Oria Boer, 6-2, 6-1 at the sixth position.
Against Richmond, junior Yuri Kurashima and sophomore Sharanya Pattabi won at first doubles, 8-6. That was the lone match the Cherry and White would win. The Spiders came back to win the next two doubles matches to secure the point. Pattabi retired after trailing 3-1 in the first set of her third singles match while Marsalkova and Frazier fell in straight sets at fourth and fifth singles, respectively.
The Owls (11-12) next play the loser of the match between fourth-seeded Massachusetts and fifth-seeded Duquesne on Saturday at 6:00 p.m.
