4.28.06 | Women's Lacrosse
PHILADELPHIA-With the battle for seedings in the 2006 Atlantic 10 Championship raging, the Temple Owls knocked off the St. Bonaventure Bonnies, 19-9, in a hard fought game. The teams were tied for second place with a 4-1 record in the conference coming into the game, but with five different Owls scoring at least two goals, the Bonnies had no hope. Allison Frengs led all scorers with five goals, while Corey Leader and Whitney Richards each earned four goals and three assists for TU. Temple improves to 9-6, 5-1 in A-10 play, while the Bonnies fall to 13-2, 4-2 in the A-10.
Nicole Cataldo netted two goals, as did Casey Cech. Cech added an assist to her strong play. Johna Capaldo found the back of the net one time but assisted on two others. Nicole Caniglia scored one goal on the day.
Leader scored the game's first goal at 27:48 but Courtney Gibbons answered a minute later to tie the game at one. The Owls fought back, however, and scored four unanswered goals to take a 5-1 lead with just under 20 minutes remaining. SBU ended the Temple scoring run with an unassisted goal at 17:51 but it was just a slight hiccup as the Owls rattled off four more goals to take a 9-2 advantage at 13:11. A free position goal by Nicole Montondo at 10:33 started the Bonnies on a four-goal swing of their own and with just over four minutes remaining, the gap was closed to just three goals (9-6). It was just a little too close for comfort for Temple, as it netted four goals to end the half, three of which were assisted by Richards. TU had a commanding 13-6 lead at the break. Temple dominated the first stanza, out-shooting the Bonnies, 22-8.
SBU struck first in the second half when Katie Hurley found Gibbons at 23:41. Richards responded with a free position goal two minutes later to keep it as a seven-goal game. The Bonnies kept plugging away and were able to get within six goals (15-9) at 13:34, but the Owls finished the game as they had started - with a four-goal run. Leader netted the final three tallies for Temple, as it went on to win its fifth straight.
Caitlin Gregory started in goal for Temple and earned two saves. Bridget McMullen played the second half and earned three saves.
Temple closes out the regular season on Sunday when it hosts Duquesne at 1 p.m. Seniors Corey Leader, Nicole Cataldo, Patty Glavin and Dawn Yergey will be honored in a pregame ceremony.
