TOP-SEED CHARLOTTE DOWNS TEMPLE, 4-2, IN A-10 MEN'S TENNIS SEMIFINALS

MONROEVILLE, PA -- The Temple men's tennis team's dream of its first Atlantic 10 Championship since 1985 came to an end Saturday afternoon with a hard-fought 4-2 loss to top-seed Charlotte at the Club 4 Life. The fifth-seed Owls (16-8) still have ensured the program's best finish at the conference tournament since a second-place showing in 2000. Temple will take on seventh-seed Dayton for third place Sunday at 11:00 a.m.
Charlotte opened the match by winning the first two matches of doubles play to take a 1-0 lead. The Owls' #1 team of senior Jon Sy and freshman Eduardo Saavedra dropped a tightly-contested, 8-5 decision to Ryan Johnson and Felix Berhoerster. Junior Matt Struble and senior Daniel Davis lost at third doubles, 8-6, to Stuart Lynas and Dorian Host. Senior Milan Juricka and sophomore Philip Gegenheimer were even at 5-5 in their second doubles match when the point was decided.
Juricka easily dispatched Johnson at second singles, 6-1, 6-1 for his 22nd win of the season, tying him for team best singles wins with Gegenheimer. Saavedra defeated Bernhoester, 6-4, 6-2, at sixth singles. It was his third straight singles win of the tournament, upping his record on the season to 12-4.
Charlotte's Roy Sichel downed Jordan Krevitz, 6-0, 6-0 while Zvi Lantseberg posted a 6-4, 6-1 win over Struble at the fourth slot. Gegenheimer, who lifted TU to the semifinal round with a come-from-behind win late Friday night, was unable to overcome a first-set tie-break loss to Lynas. That proved to be the deciding point in the match.
