WOMEN'S LACROSSE RALLIES FOR 13-10 WIN OVER GEORGE WASHINGTON
4.9.06 | Women's Lacrosse
WASHINGTON, D.C.- George Washington jumped out to an early 4-0 lead but Temple went on to outscore the Colonials 13-6, including a 5-0 run to begin the second half, to earn its first A-10 victory, 13-10, on Sunday afternoon. The Owls improve to 5-5 overall and 1-1 in the A-10, while GW drops to 5-8 overall and 1-2 in Conference play.
The Colonials took charge right away scoring four unanswered goals by
four different players and looked like they were on their way to a rout before Temple answered with a pair of goals to cut the deficit to 4-2 at the 22:38 mark of the first half.
GW's Annie Howley scored an unassisted goal just 1:10 into the game followed less than two minutes later by a goal from Laura Hostetler. A minute after Hostetler's goal, Kristin Karcsh found the net on a free position shot before Colleen Schmidt added an unassisted goal for a 4-0 GW lead.
Temple got on the scoreboard at the 23:36 mark on a free position goal from junior Allison Frengs and was followed up just three minutes later on a goal by Casey Cech, after taking a pass from Whitney Richards, to cut the lead to 4-2. Karcsh scored at the 19:29 mark before Temple added a pair of scores by Frengs and Johna Capaldo to creep within one at 5-4. Schmidt answered with an unassisted goal at the 8:03 mark to put GW up, 6-4, before Capaldo scored her second goal of the half at the 3:37 mark. Schmidt added her third goal of the period followed by a score from TU's Richards to end the half with GW clinging to a 7-6 lead.
The Owls scored less than a minute into the second half to tie the game on a goal by Richards and reeled off the next four goals to take an 11-7 lead with 11:40 remaining. The Colonials then began winning the draw controls and answered with three straight goals, one by Hayley McDonough and a pair from Hostetler, to get GW back within one at 11-10 with more than seven minutes left. After GW
had overcome a six-goal deficit to defeat Saint Joseph's just 48 hours earlier, it looked like they were about to stage a similar comeback but Temple rose to the challenge and scored the game's final two goals on shots by Frengs and a free postion goal into an empty net by Berkley Summerlin, to seal the victory.
GW played both of its goalkeepers Caitlin Garman and Emily Fortunato to find a way to stop the Owls but both had limited success. Temple goalie Caitlin Gregory recorded 10 saves while facing 27 GW shots.
Temple aims for its second A-10 victory when it travels to returns home to face Saint Joseph's on Saturday, April 15 at 1 p.m.
