PHILADELPHIA - More than ninety Temple University student-athletes participated in a "pick up and clean up" of Diamond Street on the North perimeter of the Temple campus on Sunday, April 30.  Fifty--two football players and several football coaches were among the group, which donned gloves and utilized brooms, shovels and trash bags to help beautify a six-block stretch of landscape from 10th to 16th Streets.

"The Diamond Street clean-up was one of several community outreach projects this spring where the football team, under the leadership of head coach Al Golden, led the way," said Assistant Athletic Director for Student Services Gary Bundy.  "Having over ninety student-athletes with brooms and shovels beautifying the neighborhood was an awesome sight."

Student-athletes from the fencing, men's and women's soccer, men's and women's gymnastics, field hockey and the softball teams also participated in the clean up.  As a result of the successful effort and positive feedback from the community, another Diamond Street clean up is planned for August.

The clean-up was part of the Owl Outreach program conducted by the Department of Athletics.  Via the program, student-athletes are organized to visit schools, hospitals, mentor children and perform various works in the community.  Temple proudly subscribes to the NCAA Life Skills program which seeks to develop the personal, career and academic skills of student-athletes.
