PHILADELPHIA - The Temple University Department of Athletics today announced a four game scheduling agreement with Villanova that will see the Owls host the Wildcats at Lincoln Financial Field in 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012. The contract renews a city gridiron rivalry that dates back to 1908.
"This agreement is significant for both our program and for college football in Philadelphia," said Temple head coach Al Golden. "This series not only meets our initiative to schedule non-conference opponents within our recruiting footprint, it also helps re-energize the rich tradition of college football in the city. To provide highly anticipated regional contests in a premier venue such as Lincoln Financial Field is a win. Ultimately, it's an agreement that makes sense for the universities, the programs, the fans and the city."
"This four game series will be a great shot in the arm for college football in the city of Philadelphia," said Villanova head coach Andy Talley. "Villanova and Temple is a natural rivalry and the series will be a treat for the local college football fans. Being able to play all four games at Lincoln Financial Field will provide a first class venue and atmosphere for the teams and the fans. This is an agreement that is good for both Villanova and Temple."
Temple, which begins a full Mid-American Conference schedule in 2007, already has future non-conference regional scheduling agreements with Army, Connecticut, Maryland, Navy and Penn State.
The Owls open their 2006 campaign at Buffalo on Thursday evening, August 31. The Cherry & White will have its annual media day (4:00 p.m.) and inaugural Fan Fest (5-7:00 p.m.) on Wednesday, August 23, at Lincoln Financial Field.
