PHILADELPHIA - Freshman Radka Ferancova continued her impressive debut with the Temple women's tennis team. Ferancova won both of her matches Friday afternoon at the 2006 Cissie Leary Invitational, including a 6-3, 6-2 victory over fourth-seeded Preethi Mukandan of Harvard, to lead the Owls. Play continues Saturday.
Ferancova won her first match of the day, besting Princeton's Laura Trimble, 6-4, 6-1. She followed that with her impressive win over Mukandan, her fifth straight singles win to open her collegiate career.
Fernacova also teamed with senior Yuri Kurashima at doubles, defeating Lindsay Risebrough and Alex Seaton of Minnesota, 8-3, in their first match. The duo dropped a tightly-contested match to the fourth-seeded team of Sarah Huah and Ivana King, 9-8 (7-1 tiebreaker).
Kurashima won her first singles match of the day, downing Ashley Lostritto, 6-0, 6-0. She then ran into Blake Ashley of Princeton, seeded from 9-16 in the draw. The Ashley-Kurashima match was arguably the best of the day. Kurashima won the first set 6-4, but Ashley recovered to edge Kurashima, 7-6 (6), in the second set. A super tie-breaker was needed to determine the match and Ashley prevailed 13-11.
Kurashima takes on Mukundan Saturday in the consolation round while Ferancova battles unseeded Masha Pozar of UMass. Both matches begin at 11 a.m.
