PHILADELPHIA - - Senior Yuri Kurashima won her final two matches of the Cisse Leary Invitational to capture the consolation championship on Sunday at the Lott Tennis Courts on Penn's campus.

"Yuri has worked a lot on her fitness and mental toughness which helped her overall confidence," Temple women's tennis coach Traci Green said. "Her confidence allowed her to win five solid matches this weekend."

Kurashima started the day by having her opponent switched. Expecting to play Penn State's Laura Holzberg, Kurashima instead opened with Sonia Rozimovsky from Ohio State. The Tokyo native won handily by scores of 6-2, 6-0. Kurashima did meet Holzberg in the final, and bested the Lady Lion, 7-6 (1), 6-3, to win the consolation title.

Kurashima, like freshman Radka Ferancova, is 7-1 on the 2006 campaign. Ferancova, who was fighting an illness all week, had to default her consolation match Sunday.

I am excited about the progress Radka is making so far this fall," Green said. "As a freshman, she beat some tough competition, and I am pleased to see her competing the way she did this weekend even though she was not 100%. Radka has been working hard in practice and is very eager to continue improving."

The women's tennis team is off until October 5 when they travel across country to play at the ITA All-American held in Los Angeles.
