Women's Tennis Claims Three Titles At Hampton Roads Tournament

NORFOLK, VA - It was a big weekend for Temple's women's tennis team at the Hampton Roads Collegiate Invitational as junior Felicia Frazier, freshmen Josephine Bergman and the pair of sophomore Anastasiia Rukavyshnykova and junior Dina Senkina all won their respective tournaments.
"This past weekend was a huge success in all aspects," said first year women's tennis coach Jill Breslin. "The team as a whole came out and competed hard with some of the best teams in our region. We definitly showed that we can play with the top teams in the country."
Frazier defeated Delaware's Ivana Petrich 6-1, 6-1, Radford's Mirna Matic 6-3, 6-1, UNC Wilmington's Chelsea Kahle 6-1, 6-4 in the semifinals and UNC Wilmington's Kayla Schwenk in the finals to claim the women's C-2 singles championship.
Bergman bested Mary Washington's Amy Sheetz 6-4, 6-2, George Mason's Alex LaCoste 6-2, 6-1, Longwood's Nashim Noadab 6-0, 6-0, Delaware's Alexa Dragonette 6-2, 6-3 in the semifinals and Campbell's Liza Bensimon in the finals to win the women's C-1 crown.
Rukavyshnykova and Senkina defeated Radford's Noldin/Tomaic 8-1 in the quarterfinals, Old Dominion's Citic/Kubicikova 8-4 in the semifinals and William and Mary's Sabacinski/Zidek 8-6 to win the women's B-2 doubles championship.
In other singles action, Senkina advanced to the finals of the women's A singles. She defeated Longwood's Laura Simon 6-2, 6-3, Old Dominion's Jana Kubicikova 6-2, 7-5, Pittsburgh's Kristy Borza 6-3, 6-4, and Delaware's Susan Pollack 6-4, 6-3 before falling to William and Mary's Ragini Acharya 6-1, 6-2 in the final.
Rukavyshnykova advanced to the semifinals of the B--1 finals, defeating George Mason's Sarah Dieffenbach 6-2, 6-1, George Washington's Kendall Swenson 6-2, 3-6, 1-0 (3) before falling to William and Mary's Lauren Sabacinski 6-4, 6-0. Sophomore Whitney Tillman advanced one round in women's D singles, topping Loyola's Mallory Tarca 6-2, 6-1. Freshmen Lucie Pazderova advanced one round in women's B-2 singles, besting James Madison's Briana Jain 6-1, 6-2.
In doubles play, the pair of Frazier and Bergman advanced to the finals of women's D doubles, besting George Mason's Crisostomo/LaCoste 8-1, Loyola's Cassle/Keyser-Baker 8-2, and Radford's McGuire/Spector 8-1, before falling to Pittsburgh's Benic/Broverman in the finals. The pair of sophomore Christine Clermont and Pazderova fell in first round action.
The Owls next hit the courts Friday, October 19 when they travel to Norfolk for the ITA East Regionals. Tournament play will continue until Tuesday, October 23.
