CLEVELAND - Temple's Terrance Knighton (Windsor, Conn.) and Jake Brownell (Thorfare, N.J.) have earned Mid-American Conference Player of the Week honors for the East division, the MAC announced on Monday.
The duo made key plays in Temple's 16-15 win over Northern Illinois last Saturday. The victory was the Owls' first of the season and the first in MAC play. The honors are the first for the Temple players during the team's inaugural season as a member of the MAC.
Knighton, a 6-4 junior defensive tackle, earned Defensive Player of the Week accolade. For the second week in a row, Knighton turned up the heat. After recovering the first two fumbles of his career last week at Army, the junior recovered his third career fumble in the second quarter against Northern Illinois, ran the ball 66 yards, and scored his first career touchdown. The touchdown was Temple's first defensive touchdown of the year and the team's only TD in the 16-15 Homecoming win over Northern Illinois.
After six games, Knighton has 20 tackles, three sacks and a team-best three fumble recoveries.
Brownell shared Special Teams Player of the Week honors with Akrons' Andre Jones. The 5-10 placekicker nailed a 39-yard field goal with just nine seconds on the clock to give Temple its first win of the season. After missing a 37-yard attempt in the first quarter, the redshirt sophomore came back to redeem himself with 25-yarder in the second quarter to give TU a 10-6 halftime lead. He also converted a 38-yard FG in the third to put TU ahead, 13-6.
After six games, Brownell stands second in Temple team scoring with 29 points. He's made 6-of-9 field goals and 11-of-12 extra points
Brownell also earned OwlSports.com Athlete of the Week honors.
