CLEVELAND - Temple sophomore Jake Brownell (Thorofare, N.J.) has been named to the 2007 Academic All-Mid-American Conference Football Team, the MAC announced on Tuesday. The 30-member team of honorees was selected by the schools' Faculty Athletics Representatives.
The Temple placekicker, who carries a 3.53 grade-point average in biology, played in all 12 games for the Owls this fall, handling field goals and extra points. Temple's leading scorer with 57 points, Brownell went 13-of-21 in field goals and 18-of-19 in extra points. He nailed a career-high three field goals in the win at Akron, including a career-long 41 yarder. Brownwell kicked the game-winning 39-yard field goal with just nine seconds on the clock to give Temple a 16-15 win over Northern Illinois en route to MAC Special Teams Player of the Week and OwlSports.com Athlete of the Week honors. Earlier this week, Brownell was named to the 2007 Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Football Team.
A member of the President's Academic Honor Roll and University Honors Program, Brownell earned a scholarship with the Cherry & White after initially joining the program as a walk-on. Last fall he was named a Sporting News Honorable Mention Freshman All-American. Temple finished the 2007 season at 4-8 overall and 4-4 during its inaugural season of MAC play under second-year head coach Al Golden.
