Owls Drop Season Opener, 15-5, to Penn

PHILADELPHIA - The visiting Penn Quakers rattled off 15 goals, including 12 in the first half, to earn a 15-5 victory over the Temple Owls and spoil first year head coach Bonnie Rosen's debut on Wednesday afternoon. The Owls drop to 0-1 on the year, while the Quakers improve to 2-0.
Penn jumped out to a 6-0 lead, thanks to three goals from Becca Edwards. Brittney Hoffman finally got Temple on the board when she took a diving shot into the back of the cage with 9:28 remaining. It was just a brief hiccup, however, as the Quakers scored three more goals to take a 9-1 lead with just over five minutes to play. Allison Frengs converted a free position shot at 4:25 to make it 9-2 but the Quakers netted three more before the half was through to take a 12-2 lead at the break.
The second half was much more balanced, with each team scoring three goals. Frengs teamed with Casey Cech to attack first in the second stanza but Penn responded with two straight goals to open up a 14-3 lead, its largest of the game. Frengs and Cech made it a 10-goal game (14-4) at 7:11 but it was too little too late as the Quakers rolled to their second straight win, 15-5.
Temple was led by Frengs with three goals, while classmate Casey Cech dished two assists. Hoffman and Nicole Caniglia added goals for the Owls and Whitney Richards contributed one assist.
Rachel Manson's five goals paced the Quaker attack, while Edwards had three goals and one helper. Ali Deluca (2g, 1a), Kaitlyn Lombardo (2g, 1a), Hannah Rudloff (1g, 1a), Allison Ambrozy (1g, 1a), Chelsea Kocis (1g), Chrissy Muller (1a), Barb Seaman (1a) all contributed to the balanced Penn attack.
Temple's Bridget McMullan saved 10 of the 32 shots that she faced, while Sarah Waxman and Emily Szelest teamed to stop four Temple shots.
Temple returns to action on Sunday when it host #4 UNC at 1 p.m.
