PHILADELPHIA - Berkley Summerlin and Nicole Caniglia netted three goals apiece to lead a balanced Temple squad over the visiting Marist Red Foxes, 17-4, on Saturday afternoon. The Owls saw production from 14 different players to take a 12-2 halftime lead and earn their first win of the season (1-3). The Red Foxes fall to 1-1 on the year.
"We've had three really tough games to start the season," commented head coach Bonnie Rosen. "We've learned a lot from those games and today we were ready, both physically and emotionally, to put it all together."
Caniglia got the Temple attack started with an unassisted goal just five minutes into the contest but Marist's Lindsey Diener tied the game at one with an unassisted tally of her own less than two minutes later. Casey Cech converted a free position shot at 21:05 to make it 2-1 in favor of Temple and Summerlin added one more at 18:43 to give the Owls a 3-1 lead. Stephanie Garland caught a pass from Lindsay Rinefierd to cut the Temple lead to just one goal at 15:37 but that would be as close as the Red Foxes would come for the remainder of the contest. Temple rattled off nine straight goals, including two goals each by Summerlin and Caniglia to give the Owls a 12-2 lead at the break. Newcomer Lindsey Colferai scored her first collegiate goal after converting a free position shot just 15 seconds before the end of the first stanza.
The Owls continued to dominate in the second half, with rookie Chelsea Rosiek netting an unassisted goal four and a half minutes into the stanza. Whitney Richards fed Alison Incarnato 40 seconds later, giving the freshman her first collegiate goal and making the score 14-2. Diener ended the 11-goal Temple run with a tally at 22:47 but the Owls netted two more to make it 16-3 at 8:25. Ali Carnabuci gave Marist its fourth goal at 6:31, but the Owls weren't finished spreading the love around. Sophomore Andrea DeSabato caught a pass from Kelly Yemm to earn her first career goal and end the game with the 17-4 result.
Richards led the Owls with two assists, while Cech and Johna Capaldo netted two goals apiece.
Though the score indicated otherwise, the teams were fairly equal in terms of shots taken. The Owls took 24 shots to Marist's 20, but the difference maker was Temple's Bridget McMullan. The junior goalie stopped eight shots playing all 60 minutes.
"Bridget had an amazing game today," said Rosen. She came up big with point blank saves as well as difficult ones."
Liz Burkhard and Kyle Jansky shared time in goal for the Red Foxes and had four saves.
Temple next travels to Brown for a game with the Bears on Friday, March 16 at 4 p.m.
