CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Allison Frengs netted her third straight hat trick and added an assist but it was not enough to overcome a pair of four-goal bursts by the #7 University of Virginia Cavaliers and the Owls, fell 18-8 in Charlottesville.
The Cavaliers (4-0) jumped out to a 2-0 lead before Temple was able to get on the board in the sixth minute of play. Virginia then scored four goals in five minutes, with two off the stick of Blair Weymouth, to push out to a 6-1 lead. The teams traded goals over a 22-second span before the Owls scored twice in just over a minute to cut the deficit to 7-4. Virginia's Kaitlin Duff and Kate Breslin scored 23 seconds apart to push the margin back to 10-5, but Frengs' goal with 10 seconds to play in the half off an assist from Berkley Summerlin made the score 10-6 at the break.
Breslin scored twice in the opening 1:46 of the second half to give Virginia an eight-goal cushion. Frengs notched her third goal of the game to pull back within five, but the vaunted Virginia defense held the Owls off the scoreboard for the next 22 minutes.
Again Virginia scored four goals in five minutes, with Megan O'Malley and Weymouth both contributing a goal and an assist in that blitz.
Bridget McMullan made two saves in 17 minutes, while Jessica Colucci had eight saves in 43 minutes.
Nicole Caniglia contributed two goals, while Summerlin, Lindsay Wells and Chelsea Rosiek all tallied one.
Lauren Benner came in for Kendall McBrearty and made two saves while allowing no goals, and Sara Hairfield played the final five minutes in the cage and made three saves while allowing Temple's final goal.
Blair Weymouth and Kate Breslin both notched four goals, with Weymouth getting two in the first four-goal blitz and Breslin scoring two to open up the second half, to lead the Virginia attack.
Temple returns home to Philadelphia on Saturday, March 10 when it hosts the Red Foxes of Marist at 1 p.m.
