PHILADELPHIA- A late goal by George Washington's Taylor Donahue gave the Colonials a narrow 7-6 victory over the Temple women's lacrosse team in horrendous conditions on Sunday afternoon. Temple falls to 4-8 on the season and suffers its first loss in Atlantic 10 play (2-1), while the Colonials improve to 7-5 overall and 3-1 in Conference play.
A water-logged Geasey Field was to blame for the incredibly sloppy game, which featured a combined 42 turnovers and 24 fouls.
Johna Capaldo scored twice to lead Temple, while Katie Yori, Casey Cech and Kelly Yemm all contributed one goal. Allison Frengs netted one goal and assisted on one other, while Berkley Summerlin and Whitney Richards dished one helper a piece.
Donahue had three goals for the Colonials, including two in the final five minutes of play, while Meghan Cratty scored two tallies to lead GW.
Play was centered mostly in midfield in the first stanza, resulting in an extremely low-scoring half. Capaldo struck first, slipping one past GW netminder Caitlin Garman at 20:54. Temple's lead was extremely short-lived, however, as Kristina Harvey fed Cratty to tie the score at one just 30 seconds later. Cratty struck again at 18:09 to make it 2-1 but a two-goal Owl run put Temple back in control just four and a half minutes later. Capaldo and Frengs teamed to score the Cherry and White's second goal, while Summerlin hit a cutting Yori for a goal at 13:43. Kristin Karcsh's unassisted goal with 3:40 remaining, made it 3-3 going into the break.
Cech put Temple up by one (4-3) with a free position goal at 25:55, but the Colonials answered with a two-goal run to put them ahead 5-4 with just over 12 minutes to play. After going nearly 21 minutes without a goal, Frengs sparked a two-goal Cherry and White run to put Temple back on top, 6-5, with 5:31 remaining. The Colonials were not about to go down without a fight however, and Laura Dominiak found a cutting Donahue to tie the game at six with 4:10 left to play. Donahue's unassisted tally at 1:44 ended the game with a 7-6 result and gave Temple its first Conference loss of the year.
Bridget McMullan had four saves on the day, while Garman stopped 13 TU shots.
Temple next travels to Saint Bonaventure for a game against the Bonnies on Friday, April 20 at 4 p.m.
