Women's Tennis Falls To Richmond, 4-0, In A-10 Championship Match

MONROEVILLE, PA - The Temple women's tennis team fell to Richmond, 4-0, in the Atlantic 10 Women's Tennis Championship on Sunday at the Club 4 Life in Monroeville, Pa. With the loss, the No. 1 seeded Owls end the season with a 16-4 record and their best showing in the A-10 tournament since 2003.
Richmond jumped out to a 1-0 lead as Beatrice Grasu and Robin Carter defeated Yuri Kurashima and Christine Clermont, 8-4, at first doubles, and Jessica Hubbard and Xenia Schneider beat Anastasiia Rukavyshnykova and Sharanya Pattabi in a close match at third doubles, 8-6.
In singles action, the Spiders claimed the victory in straight-set wins at the No. 1, 3, and 6 spots. Pam Duran defeated Yuri Kurashima, 6-2, 6-3 at first singles. Beatrice Grasu beat Radka Ferancova 7-5, 6-0 at the third position, while Jessica Hubbard defeated Felicia Frazier, 6-4, 6-1 at the sixth spot.
"We fought really hard today," said third year head coach Traci Green. "We beat Richmond earlier in the season, and we knew this rematch was going to be a battle."
This is Temple's first loss against Atlantic 10 competition this season. Richmond, winning their fourth-straight title and fifth in the last six years, improves their record to 9-7 as they will represent the league in the 2007 NCAA Women's Tennis Championship.
"We have a lot to be proud of this season," said Green. "We were nationally-ranked (#85) for the first time in Temple women's tennis history. We have a young team that excels on and off the court, and I am excited for the future of this program."
